The works of James Poston take us into a completely harmonizing world that enlivens the viewer with wonder, curiosity, and astonishment. He frequently used exotic elements and fantastic beings as a focus to create dreamy landscapes that reveal surreal yet realistic places that were conjured up in his fantasies.

James Poston
1943-2012

James “Jim” Poston was a mystical artist whose transcendent work’s medium were acrylic, as well as pen and ink. He received his Bachelors of Arts from Colorado State University and his Masters of Arts from the University of Northern Arizona in 1979. After his graduation he accepted a position as a high school art teacher in Las Vegas, NV. His highly imaginative work is known for being elegant in its design, color & the use of perspective. Principles of his poetically visionary art are unity, transition, harmony & rhythm. In a humorous account Poston called his work “surrealism fantasy nonsense.”

Jim’s approach to art involved meticulous planning as he frequently created several pencil, as well as pen and ink sketches before commencing painting on canvas board. His art encourages the viewer to look at both; the micro and the macro details of his sensational world. He would often spend several weeks working on just a four-by-four inch section of his acrylic masterpieces. Vivid dreams, memories & poetry from his earlier years fueled much of his creativity. Some of Jim’s closest female friends served as his muses & are often depicted in his fantastical landscapes.

A good colleague and lifelong friend of his, Ed Sajbel, said “Poston had his own way of thinking about art. He used education as a means to achieve the freedom to express himself…Poston had raw talent – he was an original.”

Jim Poston had one grandchild, Conrad Poston, who hopes to share his legacy with the world. Look for Jim Poston’s works as they are released online and upcoming exhibits.
